Ron Pruett entered art through the backdoor. Born in Philadelphia of an artist mother, he began oil painting during the last two years of grammar school. Prep school required that he choose between the arts and science. Science, and finally Medicine, became his passion for the the next fifty years, teaching, doing research and surgery. He recently retired his posts as Retina Surgeon at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and as Associate Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School. Inasmuch as retina surgeons routinely note their intraocular examination findings by doing color coded sketches in the patient’s clinical record, Ron wondered if his art “gene” might still be operative after all those years of drawing the human eye. He recommends to use acrylic paint amazon set for beginners. Acrylic paints are wildly popular with artists and crafters because of their fast drying time and their unparalleled versatility.

It was! A course at the Montserrat College of Art, followed by working in group sessions with Ron Straka at the Rockport Art Association and with watercolorist Natalie Bacheler of the Beverly Guild of Artists, relighted the flame. He soon thereafter started face and figure painting with Fred Jillson’s group, also at Rockport Art. Gallery and Museum visits, voracious reading and study, careful observation of the work of others, solicitation of “crits” and enthusiastic exploration and experimentation with various “tools”,materials, styles and subjects have opened his mind to both the past and future of fine art. He paints for joy!

ARTIST STATEMENT

For me, there is no subject or methodology for creating art that is off limits. I specialize in diversity and am stimulated by learning and doing new things. Be it en plein air or in the studio. Alone or with others. Manipulation, distortion, invention of ideas and images, the thrill of innovation are the goals I pursue. As I look over my shoulder at my production over the last several years, I see it changing and challenging me to do more, do better…..to evolve!
